I had a situation recently in which I realized that some of the images I’m looking for where gone. It looked like I accidentally deleted them. I planned to use those images. I thought I will not be able to restore them. Then I explored a little and came to conclusion that it is quite an easy to restore them. There are several methods that can help you to restore not only the image, but all the documents you’ve deleted. I will show you two methods that I used.
Restore to the previous version
The first method is when you know in which folder was your photo. Right-click on the folder and open the Properties. When it opens, click on the ‘previous versions’ tab. There will be all the versions of that folder before you did any changes. When you find the image you’re looking for and copy them to a folder or restore on that date before you deleted the image.
Another method is by using restore software. Free tools that can help you are Recuva, Undelete NTFS, Undelete360 and many others. I tested most of them and they helped me to return some documents. If they did not return the complete version of the document, they save at least 90%, which is still very satisfying. They work on a principle of scanning a disk or a specific folder. All you need to do is fill out the information on what type of document it was. After that, they find everything that is deleted and you choose what file you want to restore.
Back up and secure your data
Pictures, as well as other digital documents can be saved because they are never really deleted; they only open space for other documents that are being saved. You need to keep in mind that you can restore files until a physical damage of the disc happens. So if you have a memory card or an external drive that had fallen into the water or fell to the floor and broke these methods won’t be able to help you save files from them.
It is recommended to keep the documents at least on two to four places, especially if you do something professionally, for example, photography or writing. You don’t want to lose your precious and hard work. Always make a backup of your work. Store documents on multiple devices and on the external drive as well. Even try to keep physical copies. When you secure your work like that, you can’t lose something important that can do serious damage to you.
You need to watch out on many things while using your memory card in the camera. Format it in the camera, never on the computer. Save your images after every shooting. Do not use the same card for multiple cameras. Never remove your memory card while the camera is taking a picture or writing data. This will certainly damage the images on it. With cautious using of your gear and by doing the backup on multiple devices, we secure and protect our data from losses.
